GRID-TIED SOLAR SYSTEM

WITHOUT BATTERY

The sole purpose of a grid-tied Solar system is to reduce the monthly electricity bill, it does not provide backup power if the grid is unavailable.

The sole purpose of a grid-tied Solar System is to reduce cost. The utility grid will be used as a transport mechanism for the power produced from Solar panels to serve loads as they occur. This can be for single phase as well as three phase connections. Any shortfall in production will be supplemented by the utility grid, which is a seamless and automatic process. Overproduction by the Solar system can be supressed by using an energy meter, or ideally it can be fed back into the grid if possible. Permission for feed-back into the grid for commercial systems can be applied for with Eskom and we can assist with this process.

DECIDING FACTORS

ADVANTAGES :

  • Cost effective solution with immediate return on investment seen in the monthly electricity bill.

  • Average payback period is plus/minus  3 years, depending on the tariff paid. 

  • Company tax benefit up to 28% can be claimed, for the full amount in the year following commissioning of the system.

  • Avoid or reduce carbon taxes once legislated

DISADVANTAGES :

  • No power if grid fails

  • own production limited to daytime usage (unless feedback into the grid is permitted)

GRID-TIED SOLAR SYSTEM

WITH BATTERY

The purpose of such a Solar system is to reduce the monthly electricity bill even more, as now your own power can also be used at night-time, and to avoid losses and inconvenience during load shedding and other power outages. 

A grid-tied Solar system with battery backup will consist of a grid-tie inverter and PV panels, with the addition of battery storage. Battery bank size can vary from a small system to e.g. only cover office equipment during a power outage to a large battery bank to run a complete operation during night-time. Availability of a battery bank will enable the business to produce enough Solar energy to store power for night-time use or use during power outages, and also to use the batteries for load variations (over- and underproduction as loads occur), where feed-back into the grid is not an option.

ADVANTAGES :

  • Immediate return on investment seen in the monthly electricity bill. Average payback period depends on tariff paid and size of battery bank

  • Company tax benefit up to 28% can be claimed, for the full amount in the year following commissioning of the system.

  • Avoid or reduce carbon taxes once legislated

DISADVANTAGES :

  • Higher capital outlay and longer payback period than a purely grid-tied system

OFF-GRID 

SOLAR SYSTEMS

An off-grid Solar System is similar to a Grid-tied Solar System with Battery, with the only difference being in the size of the battery bank.

We will have to make sure that the system size will cater for enough production and storage in case of a couple of rainy days, as there will be no grid to fall back on. It may be necessary to incorporate a generator into the system design.

DECIDING FACTORS

ADVANTAGES :

  • Be fully self sufficient, no monthly electricity bills, no connection fees, no load shedding

  • Company tax benefit up to 28% can be claimed, for the full amount in the year following commissioning of the system.

  • Avoid or reduce carbon taxes once legislated

DISADVANTAGES :

  • Substantial capital outlay and careful load management is required.

  • However, where a business is running from a generator or paying a hefty fixed grid connection fee, this option is a good value proposition.

Financing can be obtained in the form of asset financing, possibly a green loan from a bank, or even a rent-to-own concept with an investor (the latter only for grid-tied systems). We can assist with all these options.
